A day in the park

Eliana read the map for us.
The trail went through a wildflower field, wooded area, and wetlands.

Taking a break.

Look at my two teeth!

Picnic time!

I love standing.

I also love it when Daddy tosses me up in the air!
Saturday was David's last day off before he started working his inpatient rotation in the ICU, so we went to a park right outside of Columbus for a stroller ride and picnic.  David and I both commented on how compact Columbus is and how it was neat that there would be a park like this so close to downtown.  Eliana has wanted to be held all the time lately.  She only tolerates being put down for a few minutes before she starts crying (which you wouldn't be able to tell from these pictures, they are deceptively happy).  As long as she is being held, she is all smiles and giggles.  But put her in that stroller and bring on the tears.  So while our walk wasn't too long, it was nice to be out in nature for a while.

Our week in review

Rebecca showing Eliana how to eat.

Cute as a bug!

We are settling in here in Columbus. Turns out we are living in a very happening place in the city.  Goodale park is within walking distance from our house and is the site of many festivals.  Last weekend was the Pride Fest.  Our friend Francesco came to visit over the weekend, so we took a walk through the park on the way to North Market.  Francesco's wife is expecting and due in September, so he pushed Eliana's stroller for practice.  I figured we could leave everyone guessing as we walked around Pride with two men, a woman, and a baby.  The park was a great place to people watch.  People wore all kinds of interesting clothing or no clothing at all.  I was told that Columbus is the "proudest" city in the midwest.  So once we were out of the park, it was off to North Market.  I love that place!  It is a collection of little vendors within a big building that sell mostly fresh, organic food and locally made goods.  Somewhat like City Market in Indianapolis, only bigger.  One of the best places in the market is Jeni's Ice Cream.  They sell all kinds of unusual handmade ice creams flavors like Backyard Mint, Salty Carmel, Queen City Cayenne, Wildberry Lavender, and Whiskey Pecan.  So good!  Another favorite is CaJohns hot sauce store.  David's favorite, I should say, not mine.  They have samples of the hot sauces, salsa, and mustards sitting out to try, and David is trying them all with sweat pouring down his face.  (I like to say, if David is not sweating, it is not spicy enough).  David had Francesco try one of his favorite hot sauces, and when Francesco did, he said "Why did you do this to me?"  I refused to try anything that wasn't on the sweet side.  David kept saying we should buy some, but I kept telling him no, it was too spicy and we didn't need it (little did he know what was already waiting for him at home for Father's Day).  So on that trip, we just bought some deliciously fresh fish with wild mushroom pasta for dinner.
Last Sunday was Father's Day, and my parents and sister came to visit (they arrived right after Francesco left - we are some popular people!).  My dad figured that if we wouldn't come to Indianapolis to see him for Father's Day, he would just have to come to Columbus to see us.  He brought Rebecca, and Michael and I are both here in Columbus, so Abby was the only one of his kids missing.  I guess we know who Dad's least favorite child is... :).  The top pic is from that visit when Rebecca was feeding Eliana.  They were quite messy.  Us girls mostly just relaxed while we put the fathers to work on fixing up the house.  David learned how to replace door knobs and put doors back on their hinges.  For dinner we had David's favorite - pizza and hot sauce.
On Thursday, the residency program had a Welcome Cookout for all of the new interns and their families.  I meant to take some pictures, but I forgot until we came back home.  Eliana was so cute that I took some pictures of her anyway, which you see above.  I really enjoyed the cookout because it was a way for me to meet some of David's coworkers so I can put some faces with the names.  Plus I met several other spouses of interns so hopefully we can all spend some time together while our husbands are off at the hospital.  There are many really nice people in David's intern group plus some families with little kids.  Eliana thoroughly enjoyed herself chatting with all the new people, especially a little 7 month old boy named Miles, until she got hungry.  We also got to know some of our neighbors better at the cookout too.  In the house to the east of ours live a couple named Stephanie and Hans.  Stephanie is a third year resident and will actually be the resident David will be following on his first week when he starts in the ICU on Sunday.  What a small world!
To continue the festivities in Goodale Park, this weekend is ComFest.  I guess it is one of the craziest weekends in Victorian Village where we live.  An insane amount of people have been wandering the streets around us.  So what is ComFest?  It is a festival that celebrates coming together as a community.  It showcases local vendors selling their crafts, local bands, and local restaurants selling their food.  It has been described to us as an alternative hippie festival with love and drugs pretty free flowing.  We were also warned not to go after dark especially with a baby.  I was a little hesitant to go, but a couple that we met in Columbus that have a baby about Eliana's age invited us to join them to listen to some music there.  So somewhat trepidatiously we set off to walk to ComFest.  It actually turned out pretty cool.  We went last evening (before dark of course).  There were several stages set up with bands playing music.  We came to see MoJoFlo, the band Tim, another person we have met in Columbus, plays in.  The music was pretty good.  Mostly we sat on the grass and talked to Morgan and Anthony while playing with their son Sam.  Sam is about three weeks younger than Eliana, but he is a little bigger than her.  Eliana is at the top of the growth charts so he must be setting records!  He is so cute too!  Morgan told us the best thing to do at ComFest is people watch.  Bizarre outfits are the norm there, but I would say there was actually a lot less nudity at ComFest than at the Pride Festival.  However, we were home by dark, so perhaps we missed some of the "love and drugs" that we had been warned about.
So all in all, I would have to say Columbus has been pretty fun so far!

Rice Cereal

Grandma and Grandpa Flanigan, please note the silver spoon she is eating off of.

Eliana decided to take the feeding into her own hands.

Half the cereal went on her face/neck/bib, and the other half went in her mouth.

Helping mommy.

Ok, so this picture is unrelated to eating solid foods, but just though you might enjoy.  Eliana thought she could help with unpacking.
We started solid foods with Eliana a couple of days ago (as solid as thinned rice cereal can be).  She seemed to maybe even like the taste.  Or at least she really liked chewing on her spoon, so she kept grabbing the spoon with cereal on it from our hands and putting it in her mouth.  She was probably not actually eating most of the food we gave her, but she at least enjoyed the process.

Starting Residency

Here is Dr. David as he heads off to start his residency at Ohio State.  He is in orientation through June but will be on his own (sort of) starting in July!

More Purdue Pics

I thought she looked so cute so I couldn't resist posting a few more pictures.  If you look closely in the last picture, you can see Eliana's TWO teeth!  I was a little surprised when we took her out to the North Market (a place downtown Columbus full of little vendors and shops) that people were commenting on how cute she looked.  I thought they would all be turned off by her Purdue apparel.  Guess even Ohio State fans can't resist a cute baby.

Buckeyes Can't Get Us

Although my driver's license might say that I am a buckeye, my heart will always belong to the Hoosier state and Purdue.  Boiler Up!

(Thanks Grandmama for the cute outfit!)

Settling In

For some reason, she loves sitting in her high chair

You know we are at home by the cloth diapers on the line.

Celebrating our two year anniversary.

Getting ready for bath time

Eliana liked having a duck join her for bath time.

The rest of the duckies are watching and wishing they could join too.
So we are starting to settle into our new space in Columbus.  This really has been a fun time.  We have a couple of weeks before David starts his residency and I am (mostly) not working.  It kinda feels like we are on a vacation, with just a bit of stress added in from unpacking.  Our new home is smaller than the apartment that we rented in Indianapolis, so we have been trying to weed through our stuff and really focus on what we need and what we can live without.  Also, we have been doing a lot of Craigslist-ing (is that how you make Craigslist into a verb?).  I have been out buying everyone else's small stuff and selling our big things.  I feel like I have been at a giant swap meet.  You take my desk, I'll take your chairs...

Our two year anniversary was on Tuesday.  We celebrated a little differently than I would have planned.  Originally, I had asked my brother Michael if he could watch Eliana so David and I could go out to dinner.  But then my mom was in town for the afternoon, so we spent most of that time working on the house.  As the evening went on, it was getting too late to really go out, plus I wanted to spend time with my mom and brother since they were here.  So we ended up just getting Chinese and eating at home with all five of us.  David gave Eliana a fortune cookie to munch on, which she of course loved.  Crazy girl.  Since that day was more work and family time, we ended up celebrating our anniversary today.  This morning, we took a walk with Eliana to a local outdoor cafe called Katalina's.  They are famous for their Sweddish Pancake Balls, which I obviously could not say no to.  I got the Nutella balls, and they were so good!  David got green eggs and ham, and we had such a nice breakfast.  I love taking walks with David and Eliana around Victorian Village.  There are so many cute houses and lots of character all around us.  We spent most of the day building, tearing apart, and rebuilding our IKEA wardrobes.  Then David made a delicious dinner of spaghetti and meatballs that we enjoyed with some wine.  Instead of a night out on the town, we just had a night at home with Eliana.  But it was perfect.  After being together for over six years, our lives might be different, but they are different in a good way!

One last note, Eliana has a second tooth about to come in!

Eliana in Pictures

This is how she always sleeps - with her arms behind her head.

Sitting up!

Someone found her feet!

And she loves them.
Here are some pictures of Eliana from before the move that I didn't have time to post earlier.  Enjoy!

5 Months Old

A few days late, but Eliana turned 5 months old on June 2nd, aka Moving Day.  And sadly, our new house doesn't have room for all of our furniture, so the dark brown chair had to go.  At least we kept Big Bear for her pictures!
